Deadlands
My intention with this photo series was to shoot street life in Redlands. As I walked around, I quickly realized the lack of people and the moving parts that typically make up lively cities. I became increasingly frustrated with the emptiness because it was the opposite of what I had planned. Instead of ditching my idea completely, I decided to start shooting empty benches and seating that I stumbled upon. I found myself finding more areas with nothing than with something.
To me, these photos feel very lonely and quiet. They have a disturbing peace to them, which is almost calming in an uncomfortable way. All these benches and chairs have held people in them before, but during the few hours I spent shooting it seemed like everybody decided to stay in.
